Casino loyalty programs run on two separate currencies, and confusing them is the most common mistake a player makes. Tier credits are the tracking number that determines your status level — your tier. Reward credits (or comp dollars, or points) are the balance you actually spend on rooms, meals, and shows. They accumulate through different mechanisms, they reset on different schedules, and only one of them controls what a casino host will actually do for you.

What tier credits measure

Tier credits measure how much of a player you are, not how much you have spent. The exact formula varies by program, but the common inputs are play-based: how long you played, at what stakes, on which games. In programs that publish earn rates, a rough convention is that one dollar wagered on slots earns more tier credits per dollar than a dollar wagered on table games, because the house edge on table games is lower. Slow-edge games produce lower theoretical loss per dollar wagered, so the program calibrates your earn rate accordingly.

The important implication: two players who deposit the same amount in the same night can earn very different tier credit totals depending on how they play. A slot player who runs $3 spins through 500 decisions an hour builds tier credits faster than a blackjack basic-strategy player at the same stakes. Tier credits vs reward credits: the practical difference

• Tier credits: the number that earns and maintains your status tier. They reset annually (or on a set calendar cycle). You cannot spend them; they only determine which tier you belong to.
• Reward credits (or comp dollars, or points): the balance you exchange for rooms, dining, shows, and statements. They accumulate alongside tier credits but on a different earn rate and a separate balance.
• Tier status: the level you unlock once your tier credits cross a threshold. Status carries perks like waived resort fees, lounge access, and priority service. It is the outcome that earns you a host conversation.

How tier credits reset

Most programs reset tier credits on a calendar-year or play-year basis, which means the status you earn in any given year has to be re-earned the following year. Caesars Rewards resets on January 1 and evaluates whether you have earned enough credits to maintain your current tier. MGM Rewards similarly resets annually. The programs typically give you a grace period — often one additional tier year at your current status — so a Diamond-tier player who falls short one year does not immediately drop back to Gold.

Reward credits, by contrast, expire on inactivity timelines that differ from the tier reset cycle, and unused reward balances often have their own annual expiry. Check the current terms for whichever program you use, because both reset rules change over time.

Caesars Rewards tier thresholds

Caesars Entertainment publishes its Caesars Rewards tier thresholds. The tiers and their published credit requirements as of this writing:

• Gold: the entry tier, free to join, no minimum credit requirement
• Platinum: 5,000 Tier Credits per calendar year
• Diamond: 15,000 Tier Credits per calendar year — the tier where the program gets meaningfully useful: no resort fees across most properties, Diamond Lounge access, a complimentary celebration dinner
• Diamond Plus: 25,000 Tier Credits
• Diamond Elite: 75,000 Tier Credits
• Seven Stars: 150,000 Tier Credits per calendar year — the top tier, where Caesars assigns a dedicated host proactively

MGM Rewards tier thresholds

MGM Resorts publishes its MGM Rewards tier structure, with play at any MGM property counting toward the same account. The tiers, in order:

• Sapphire: the entry tier, automatic on enrollment
• Pearl: earned through play (MGM does not publish a specific credit threshold; Pearl is where the first meaningful perks, including waived resort fees on certain nights, begin to appear)
• Gold: the next step up from Pearl
• Platinum: a higher tier with stronger perks and deeper host access
• NOIR: the invitation-only top tier — MGM does not publish credit thresholds for NOIR and issues it at the discretion of the player development team

MGM's middle tiers are less precisely published than Caesars' ladder, which is one reason host relationships matter more within the MGM system — a host who knows your play history can position you correctly even without a clean public threshold to aim at.

Why tier credits are the only number that matters for a host

Your reward credit balance, your comp dollars, your points account — none of those get you a host. What gets you a host is your tier status and your theoretical value per session. Tier credits are the visible proxy for that theoretical value, and the tier is what triggers a host conversation. Once a host is in the picture, your comp value gets handled more directly through that relationship than through automated reward redemptions. The players who maximize loyalty programs understand this: use reward credits on room upgrades and meals, but play for tier credits.
