How to Get a Free Room in Las Vegas
Updated June 20, 2026 · 7 min read
A free room is the most common comp in Las Vegas, and it's the one most within reach. You do not need to be a high roller. Casinos would rather hand you a room than have you sleep down the street and gamble down the street, so the bar is lower than people think. Here's how the comped room actually works, and seven ways to get one.
The mechanic is the same as every other comp: the casino rebates a slice of your theoretical loss, the amount your play is expected to produce over time, and a room is one of the cheapest, highest-value things they can give back. A $150 room costs the casino far less than $150, which is exactly why it's the first comp most players earn. We break the math down in How Vegas Comps Work.
Seven ways to get a free or discounted room
- Join the players club and play carded. Every uncarded hand or spin is invisible, and invisible play earns no room. The card is how your value gets counted toward an offer.
- Check your offers. Once you have tracked play, casinos push comped and discounted-room offers through their app, email, and mailers. Most people leave these sitting unredeemed. Look before you book retail.
- Time it right. A midweek or off-season night costs the casino less to give away than a sold-out Saturday, so the same level of play comps a room far more easily Sunday through Thursday.
- Ask the players desk. Tell them your play and ask what room offers you qualify for. Plenty of comped rooms go unbooked simply because nobody asked.
- Use your tier. Loyalty tiers bake in free nights. Caesars Rewards, for example, gives a free night for every 5,000 Tier Credits earned (up to seven). MGM Rewards and Wynn Rewards similarly unlock room benefits as you climb.
- Get a host. A host can comp rooms the desk can't and bump you to a suite when your play supports it. See How to Get a Casino Host in Las Vegas.
- Try the $20 trick for an upgrade. At check-in, a discreet tip can turn a paid room into a nicer one. It's an upgrade tactic, not a comp, but it pairs well with everything above. See The $20 Trick in Las Vegas.
How much do you have to gamble?
There's no flat number, because it's based on theoretical loss, not your bankroll or your win/loss. As a rough guide, generating a few hundred dollars a day in theo over a couple of carded days puts a comped or deeply discounted room in reach at many properties, and consistent four-figure theo opens up suites. Run your own number with the formula in Casino Host Requirements.
If you'd rather have it handled, tell us your property, game, and stakes and we'll match you to a host who can sort the room and the rest of the trip. Start with the three-question host match.
Frequently asked
How much do you have to gamble to get a free room in Vegas?
There's no fixed figure; it's based on your theoretical loss. Generating a few hundred dollars a day in theo over a couple of carded days commonly earns a comped or heavily discounted room. Higher, consistent play unlocks suites.
Can I get a comped room if I only play slots?
Yes. Slots build theoretical value quickly because of their speed and house edge, so carded slot play earns room offers the same way table play does. Just keep your card inserted every session.
Do I need a casino host to get a free room?
No. The players club, your mailed/app offers, and your loyalty tier can all produce comped rooms without a host. A host helps you get better rooms, suites, and faster answers once your play is at that level.
Does the $20 trick get you a free room?
Not exactly. The $20 trick is a tip for a possible upgrade on a room you're already paying for, not a comped (free) room. It pairs well with a comped room, but it's a different thing.
When is it easiest to get a room comped?
Midweek and off-season. Rooms cost the casino less to give away when the property isn't full, so the same level of play comps far more easily Sunday through Thursday than on a sold-out weekend.
